Multi-Tasking; The Real Difference Between Men and Women

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

It does not matter if it’s in the kitchen or the office; there appears to be a difference in the way that men and women handle multiple tasks. No offense to all you dads out there reading my blog, but I believe that most women feel that we do it better. (Please dads keep reading…I have good things to say about you as well).

Recent psychological studies have looked at this perceived difference.

A study by Dr. Glenn Wilson (2005) was performed for Hewlett Packard to explore the productivity of multitasking. What he discovered is astonishing. The average worker’s functioning IQ, a temporary qualitative state, drops 10 points when multitasking. That is more than double the four point drop that occurs when someone smokes marijuana.

Interestingly, the functioning IQ drop was more significant in men participating in the multitasking study by Wilson. This brings us to the controversial debate over if there are differences between genders in their abilities to multitask.

Below are some excerpts from a study performed at Missouri Western State University in 2006. The results are summarized in the abstract and the brief discussion below. They make for some interesting thoughts which I will share with you.

GENDER DIFFERENCES IN MULTITASKING
BRANDY R. CRISS
DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY
Missouri Western State University

ABSTRACT
“This ex post facto study looked for gender differences in multitasking. The participants were fifty-eight students from a small university in the Midwest. The participants were given an assignment of performing specified multiple tasks simultaneously. Afterwards, the participants were asked to fill out a brief survey that included questions about how they felt about the study and other questions to control for confounding variables. While there was no significant difference found in regards to the relationship between gender and productivity when multitasking, a significant difference was found between the genders in the area of accuracy when multitasking. My hypothesis that females would score higher on the assessment of multitasking skills was proved correct in the area of accuracy. However, again, there was no significant difference in the area of production. These results indicate that while men and women are both equally productive in the area of multitasking, women make fewer mistakes.” (Brandy R. Criss)

So what does this mean? In my life as a mom with a home business and a child that I’m homeschooling, I find that I am more likely to multi-task than my husband. I often play with my daughter, make lunch and answer the phone all at the same time. My husband finds that he has trouble focusing on making dinner unless our daughter is occupying herself. Most moms I know can get the whole family out the door to go skiing and arrive at the destination on time with everyone’s ski gear, warm clothes plus assorted snacks. Most of the dads I know would choose to live in Florida if they had to do that.

Moms tend to multi-task because they have to. Since they don’t often have the opportunity to do just one thing at a time, they have learned how to do many. The downside is that men seem to be more able to screen out other needs and distractions and truly focus on a task. As the research stated, their productivity is just a good as women’s. I think in some ways men might ultimately be more efficient since their focus is more directed. Then again, women might have the capacity for the same level of efficiency (or even greater?!) when they have the opportunity to focus uninterrupted.

When you work home, whether you are male of female, it is important to clear space when you can concentrate on your tasks for the day without distractions. Especially when you need to make business phone calls, or do any kind of writing or analysis, having clarity of thought allows you to be more professional and proficient.

In terms of overall brain functioning, there are a number of herbs and fruits which appear to help. Ginko Bilboa is one. Another is a relatively unknown (in the western world) Chinese fruit called schizandra, which is stated to be a superior “brain tonic”; and mental function enhancer.

Schizandra develops the primary energies of life, and generates vitality and radiant beauty when used regularly for some time. If used for 100 days successively, Schizandra is said to purify the blood, sharpen the mind, improve memory, rejuvenate the Kidney energy (especially the sexual functions in both men and women), and cause the skin to become radiantly beautiful.

Schizandra can be found in the new liquid Ayurvedic formulation called Zrii. You can read more about this Ayurvedic drink and it’s nutritional benefits by clicking here.

Whether you are multi-tasking or singularly focused working at home with the addition of homeschooling takes its toll on the best of brains. Remember to take time for self-care. That means good nutrition, exercise, sleep and fun.

Network Marketing is a POWERFUL Process

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

People generally think of network marketing as people selling products to other people. There is also a component related to recruiting other people into your network or team. The focus in usually on making money and creating residual income in order to improve your lifestyle, have more time and freedom and also to acquire and enjoy luxuries that are often out of reach for most people. I see the potential of network marketing as being bigger than all that. I see it as having the potential to be a POWERFUL force, not only in the world of commerce, but in the world giving and altruism.

You first need to understand the basic concept behind network marketing before you can understand the amount of POWER that I am talking about. The theory (and reality) of network marketing is that a very large number of people each do a small thing. If the goal is to sell a product, then you create a NETWORK of of people who all use the product and like it enough to tell other people. Those people also then use and purchase the product and tell even more people. If the goal is to recruit people to sell a product or an idea, it works the same way. You recruit a few people who also recruit a few people, who then also recruit just a few people. If you know anything about math you see how this group can grow exponentially. Even if every single person only recruited two people, based an Metcalf’s law, at the end of 6 months there would be over 500 people in that network.

The beauty in this and the POWER is that no one person needs to be superman or superwoman and sell large quantities of products or recruit large numbers of people for it to grow. Instead, people need to do a little bit, consistently and model this for those they sell to or recruit. They need to train their downline to duplicate what they have done (ie: sell to 5 people, or recruit 3 people). Their downline, in turn needs to train all their people to do the same. This is how successful network marketing teams and business operate.

So, you may be asking, how does this apply to helping the planet? The answer is that the methods used for building a commercial network marketing business can be partnered with a charitable or environmental cause and both goals can be addressed simultaneously. As a selling/marketing network grows, the amount of focus, time and money dedicated to the charitable cause grows as well. People can be recruited into the network with a clear focus that they can committ a portion of the money they earn to the “cause” that they group has taken on, and in doing so they increase their own wealth along with the wellbeing of others, or the environment, etc…

The details of how this actually looks and operates are more complex than room allows in this article. There are corporations that are already doing this. It is called “Cause Related Marketing”. In a network marketing scenerio, it would be individuals, each joining a network marketing company with a committment that a percentage of their PERSONAL profits would go to the Team’s charity,(or a charity of their choice). The vision is that people would join a specific network marketing Team because they liked the product AND they wanted to be a part of growing support for that specific Team’s charity. That Team would focus their marketing efforts on recruiting people who wanted to sell their product AND promote the cause.

My partner and I are presently structuring our network marketing business to operate in this way. We are involved in two network marketing companies at the moment and have 2-3 causes that we of focusing on. We are interested in hearing from anyone who would like to join with us and grow this idea. Together we can create positive change on the planet. Would You Like to Earn $1000 Extra Dollars This Month??

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

OK, As those of you who have been reading this blog for the past few months know, I don’t susually pitch a specific company or business opportunity. I believe I did it only once before. But I just received a phone call and I was so stunned by the information that I  have to share.  I hoping by putting this information out there, we can all benefit.

Some of you may have realized that I am an Independent Executive with a new network marketing company called Zrii. Zrii is a health drink endorsed by doctors at the Chopra Center for Wellbeing. Dr. David Simon, who is the head physician at the Chopra Center (which he runs, along with Deepak Chopra), helped in the formulation of Zrii. The ayurvedic ingredients in Zrii…both the Amalaki Berry and 6 highly regarded herbs, has caught the interest of many alternative and mainstream physician.

On the business side, Zrii will be officially launched in May of 2008. Presently the company is in pre-launch, setting up their structure of Independent Executives and working out any kinks on the corporate end.

I learned tonight about a special compensation bonus that just floored me. I’ve been in network marketing for a number years and I have never heard of anything like this before. The company will give “one share” of their profits to each eligible distributor each month. All it takes to become eligible is to find 5 people who want to become involved with Zrii. In November every distributor who had enrolled 5 people that month received a check for $1400…in addition to their regular commission checks. A “share” is a percentage of the company’s profits for that month. It is divided between any people who have enrolled 5…just 5.

You can do it for one month, or two or three or more. You can even enroll, sign up five people and never do another thing with the company. I doubt you’d do that since this is a really amazing business opp, but you could. I had no idea that this bonus pool was open to everyone. I’ve been working this business for 3 months so far, and all my energy has been spent setting up my personal marketing campaigns for the future. I know that the long-term residual income will come over time.  Now though, I’m going to focus a little more on the present and benefit from part of that bonus pool. I hope you will too.

You can link to my Zrii web page by clicking here.  Most of us work at home and all of us could benefit from a bonus…especially when it’s comes from such a unique and nutritionally advantageous product… What a great way to begin 2008!!
